ABOUT THE ROLE
The Director of Finance plays a senior leadership role at QCA, overseeing the organization’s financial operations and providing clear, practical financial guidance to support day-to-day decision-making and long-term sustainability.
Reporting to the Principal, Manufacturing, Data Technologies, Corporate Services, this role balances direct financial leadership with strong judgment in a complex environment. The Director of Finance will work closely with all areas of the company, supporting not only accounting and reporting, but also banking relationships, risk management, and broader business decisions.
This role is best suited for an experienced Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) with direct experience leading a finance department within a large organization undergoing continuous and complex change. Experience in the engineering and/or construction sector is preferred and will be prioritized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting and Financial Management
- Maintain clean, accurate accounting records and ensure timely, high-quality monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across all QCA areas and divisions
- Prepare financial information in clear, practical, and understandable formats to support leadership in decision making
- Develop and manage annual budgets and financial forecasts in collaboration with leadership
- Oversee day-to-day accounting activities while also addressing complex, non routine issues that require judgment and problem solving
- Oversee monthly revenue accrual process in compliance with ASPE
- Ensure strong internal controls, consistency, and discipline in financial processes while keeping systems practical and fit for purpose
- Oversee monthly and annual accounting across all areas of QCA
- Coordinate external review engagement
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements
- Ensure proper retention and documentation of financial records
Treasury, Credit, and Risk Management
- Manage and protect QCA banking relationships, and address issues as required
- Oversee controls related to cash flows
- Support financial control processes such as wire approvals, signing authorities, and risk safeguards
Systems, Technology, and Process Improvement
- Take ownership of financial systems and system integration, ensuring tools are well leveraged and appropriate for the business
- Identify opportunities to modernize and improve processes, including awareness of newer technologies and emerging tools where they add real value
- Serve as the internal point of coordination between finance, IT vendors, and external partners
- Continuously evaluate and improve internal controls, workflows, and reporting as the organization evolves
Leadership
- Provide hands-on leadership to a small, long tenured finance team, with a strong focus on continuity, engagement, and trust
- Maintain and strengthen a culture of stability, mutual respect, accountability, and open communication
- Mentor and support team members, stepping in as a problem solver when issues fall outside routine processes
- Support the team in navigating complex change in processes and operations
Strategic and Operational Support
- Support treasury activities, and risk related decisions
- Participate in operational and strategic discussions with partners beyond traditional finance responsibilities
- Function as a thought partner who can constructively challenge ideas, provide alternative perspectives, and support sound decision making
- Oversee payroll and employee benefits administration
- Responsible for the administration, human resources, and purchasing aspects of the financial department
- Lead financial analysis to identify cost reduction and efficiency opportunities
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA (CA preferred) designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification
- Senior level experience in finance or accounting, ideally within the engineering and/or construction sectors
- Strong technical accounting expertise and knowledge of ASPE standards
- Experience with advanced financial analysis and data tools
- Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint considered an asset
- Demonstrated experience managing banking relationships and credit facilities
- Experience supporting review processes
- Proven ability to manage cash flow, liquidity, and financial risk in high volume environments
- Ability to translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for non financial stakeholders
- Comfortable operating in a direct leadership role
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to engage directly with owners, bankers, and external advisors
- Practical experience with financial systems, integrations, and process improvement initiatives
- Leadership style grounded in collaboration and accountability
- Ability to work overtime as required, and perform duties beyond those outlined in the job description
