Established in 1989 and based in beautiful rural Andrew, Alberta, this organization has a wonderful business story to tell, rooted in soil and an original investment of $75,000. Since that time, the organization has experienced innovation and growth and today the Top group of companies is comprised of 3 distinct operating entities, Top Yield Fertilizers Ltd., Top Gro Agro Ltd., and Precision (farming operation). Due to decades of growth and business complexity, the Top group of companies is now looking to add a Controller to their team!

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to the President, the Controller serves as the most senior finance professional and will be fully responsible and accountable for all accounting and financial aspects of the organization, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and company policies. This individual will be fully hands-on in aspects of the full cycle of accounting. The Controller will provide timely and accurate financial reporting, provide timely and strategic financial guidance, insights, analysis, and support informed decisions and effective planning for the future. The Controller will maintain relationships with financial institutions, external accounting firms, CRA, customers and suppliers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·      Oversight and mentorship of 1 employee

·      Accountable for accurate and timely entry of AP, AR

·      Responsible for bank reconciliations and general ledger account reconciliations

·      Responsible for accuracy of intercompany transactions

·      Month end and year end close responsibilities, timely filing of CRA and regulatory obligations

·      Accurate and timely financial reporting; income statement, balance sheet and cash flow report

·      Establish and maintain internal controls, ensuring the accuracy of financial data

·      Ensure timely tax remittances and partner with external firm for corporate tax return

·      Manage banking relationships ensuring best leveraging opportunities and fees

·      Manage payroll and employee benefits accurately and on time

·      Liaise with management, internal and external stakeholders

·      Identify opportunities in accounting processes, closing gaps and minimizing risk

·      Development of analytical reports to highlight trends and identify opportunities or future risk

·      Ensure appropriate retention of financial records.

·      Perform additional related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

·      Minimum of 5 years of full cycle accounting and controllership experience

·      Track record of longevity in stand alone positions or with small team(s)

·      CPA designation desired or equivalent depth of work experience

·      Previous experience with, and proficiency in, the use of Excel and accounting software

·      Previous experience with process improvements and financial analysis desired

·      Previous leadership experience an asset
