Fleet & Field Manager – Structural Steel


Darlington Steel is a leading structural and miscellaneous metals fabricator serving the Institutional, Commercial, and Infrastructure sectors across the Greater Toronto Area. Operating since 1992 out of a 50,000 sq. ft. Whitby facility, the team combines skilled craftsmanship with dependable project delivery—fabricating and installing structural steel, stairs, railings, architectural metals, and complex custom assemblies. Known for quality, reliability, and on‑time execution, Darlington Steel continues to support diverse construction projects with a strong commitment to safety, service, and technical expertise.


We are seeking a Fleet & Field Manager to join our team—an experienced, hands‑on professional who thrives in fast‑paced construction environments and understands the realities of field operations. Reporting to the Operations Manager / General Manager, this individual will play a key role in coordinating manpower, equipment, logistics, and safety across multiple job sites. The ideal candidate is proactive, dependable, and equally comfortable leading from the office or stepping onto a job site to resolve challenges and support crews directly.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Fleet & Equipment Management

  • Manage and maintain the company fleet (trucks, trailers, cranes, lifts, forklifts, and specialty steel‑erection equipment)
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, certifications, and CVOR compliance
  • Manage licensing, insurance, and vendor/service relationships
  • Track equipment usage, downtime, and maintenance costs
  • Ensure tools and equipment are available, safe, and properly assigned


Field Operations Management

  • Schedule and coordinate manpower and equipment for daily and weekly field activities
  • Serve as primary contact for field supervisors and foremen
  • Conduct site visits to monitor productivity, safety, and quality
  • Support mobilization/demobilization and troubleshoot field logistics issues


Health & Safety Compliance

  • Enforce company and MOL safety requirements across fleet and field operations
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment meet safety standards
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and site audits
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and damage reports


Coordination & Reporting

  • Liaise with project managers, shop supervisors, and office staff to support project execution
  • Maintain accurate records of fleet maintenance and field activities
  • Provide regular operational reports and support budgeting and cost control


SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in structural steel, construction, or heavy industrial operations
  • Proven experience managing fleet vehicles and construction equipment
  • Previous experience as a field supervisor, foreman, or operations manager
  • Strong understanding of steel erection processes and field operations
  • Knowledge of Ontario construction safety regulations (MOL, WSIB, CVOR)
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license (DZ or AZ an asset)
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and site plans
  • Mechanical aptitude with trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment
  • Experience coordinating multiple job sites simultaneously
  • Familiarity with scheduling, dispatch, and maintenance‑tracking systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work Environment: Primarily based in a metal fabrication shop, with exposure to noise and machinery, and occasional visits to client sites and manufacturing floors
  • Physical Requirements: Occasional lifting involved
  • Schedule: Standard working hours with flexibility required to meet production targets (including overtime or shift work as needed)
  • Safety: Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when in fabrication areas
