ABOUT THE EMPLOYER

On behalf of our client, Shackan Indian Band, we are searching for a Community Wellness Support Worker located in the Shackan Community, 40 minutes from Merritt, BC. The Shackan Indian Band, also known as “14 Mile,” is a proud Nlaka’pamux First Nations government located in the Nicola Valley of British Columbia. The bands who make up the Scw'exmx are, in turn, members of the Nlaka'pamux Nation. The Nlaka'pamux traditional territory extends well into the State of Washington, as far north as Ashcroft, as far east as Douglas Lake and as far West as Lillooet.

All the communities of the Nlaka'pamux Nation hold title to this territory, encompassing thousands of square kilometers collectively. The Shackan Indian Band has three reserves. The majority of band members reside on the main reserve, located along the Nicola River, which has a total land base of 6,413 acres. The Papsilqua Reserve is located to the northeast of Papsilqua and Skuhun Creek with a total of 730 acres. The Soldatquo Reserve is located a few kilometres north of Shackan with the total land area. of 2,429 acres.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to the Community Wellness Manager, the Community Wellness Support Worker supports Elders, families, and community members through daily, hands-on assistance. The role works closely alongside the Community Wellness Manager, Health Navigator, Homemaker, and the Education & Social Development Coordinator to provide consistent, connected support for Shackan community members.

This position helps ensure individuals have access to the support they need while also contributing to workshops and events that promote overall wellness. The role is an essential part of the Community Wellness team, helping strengthen connections and improve quality of life for the community.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Community Support & Wellness Initiatives

  • Assist with planning and delivering prevention-focused workshops, life skills activities, parent supports, and landbased wellness initiatives.
  • Participate in community outreach to identify needs, gather feedback, and encourage community involvement in wellness and cultural programs.
  • Help build positive working relationships with internal staff, external partners, and community members.
  • Promote strength-based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed practices in daily work.

2. Cultural & Community Wellness Programming

  • Support or help facilitate cultural and community activities such as drumming, singing, beading, language sessions, or seasonal gatherings.
  • Coordinate weekly or biweekly wellness or cultural sessions for Elders, youth, and families.
  • Collaborate with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to respectfully include cultural teachings in community programming.
  • Support language revitalization by incorporating Nlaka’pamux language into daily work wherever appropriate, and actively participate in learning the language to strengthen culturally grounded service delivery.

3. Elder & Homemaker Support

  • Provide transportation for Elders and community members to and from appointments, programs, and community activities.
  • Assist Elders and households with home support tasks such as laundry, sweeping/mopping floors, dishes, and firewood assistance.
  • Provide backup coverage for the Homemaker or Health Navigator when needed and any other tasks identified through regular household assessments completed by Scw'exmx Community Health Services Society. (SCHSS)

4. Program Support, Reporting & Administration

  • Maintain confidentiality and organizational policies.
  • Assist with tracking participation, collecting data, and supporting monthly or quarterly program reporting.
  • Follow Occupational Health & Safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities.

5. Other Duties

  • Provide support for community events, gatherings, wellness initiatives, or administrative tasks as delegated by the Community Wellness Manager or Band leadership.


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Formal education in Human Services—such as a diploma or certificate in social work, community support, education, healthcare, or care aide training—or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, Elders, youth, or families.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain a Clear Criminal Record.
  • First Aid certification would be an asset, or a willingness to obtain it.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to support community programs, workshops, and cultural activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport across all age groups.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills (email, Word, simple data entry).
  • Reliable, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks.
  • Compassionate, respectful, and community centered approach.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold community protocols.
  • Knowledge of the Nlaka’pamux language, or willingness to learn.

As a Community Wellness Support Worker with Shackan Indian Band, you’ll contribute directly to community well-being - supporting Elders at home, coordinating wellness sessions, and partnering with the Wellness team to deliver strengths-based, culturally safe programs.

A company vehicle will be available for use for travel to the Shackan reserve. However, there may be times when you’ll need to use your own vehicle, and mileage will be reimbursed. Some evening or weekend work may also be required to support community activities, approved overtime can be taken as paid overtime or exchanged for time off in lieu.
